THE FOLDED PAGE

Booklet page order calculator

Map document pages onto the front and back of folded sheets. Count covers, see every added blank and check the order from the outside sheet to the centre.

Count the document pages.

The booklet

Count every document position, including the front cover, back cover and any intentional blanks. Added padding goes at the end. If the last source page must be the back cover, insert the required blanks before it in the source document and enter the revised total. The planner does not move artwork. These positions may differ from page numbers printed inside your document.

Right binding mirrors each front/back pair. It does not translate text or determine the printer’s flip setting.

DOUBLE-SIDED SHEETS4
ADDED BLANK POSITIONS0

16 document pages use four double-sided sheets. No blanks are added. Each front and back is shown from its own printed face.

OUTSIDE TO CENTRE

Two faces of one sheet.

Look at each printed face directly, with its top edge upright. Left and right refer to that view. The dashed centre line is the fold. This is a page-order diagram with no physical scale.

The complete table below runs from the outermost sheet to the centre. Nest sheets in that order. Duplex feed and flip settings depend on the printer and driver; confirm them with a small numbered test.

Blank means an added position with no source document page. The CSV keeps its source-page cell empty rather than referring to a page that does not exist.

Why the total is a multiple of four

One sheet folded in half carries two page positions on the front and two on the back. A nested booklet therefore contains four positions per sheet. The planner uses padded total = 4 × ceil(document pages ÷ 4), then divides by four for the sheet count.

A 10-page document becomes 12 booklet positions on three sheets. Positions 11 and 12 are added blanks. They are not page 11 and page 12 of the original document, and they cannot be requested from a ten-page PDF without first adding those pages.

How the pairs are calculated

For left binding, the outside front pairs the final booklet position on the left with document page 1 on the right. Its back pairs 2 with the next-to-last position. The next sheet moves two positions inward at each end. In a 16-page booklet the outer sheet is 16 | 1 on the front and 2 | 15 on the back; the centre back is 8 | 9.

Right binding mirrors the left and right positions on every face. Every document position and every padding blank occurs exactly once across the sheets.

Use the plan alongside your printing application

Acrobat’s Booklet option arranges a normal reading-order PDF automatically. Use this plan to understand or check its preview. Do not manually reorder a document and then apply booklet imposition again. The downloaded SVG is a numbered proof diagram, not converted PDF artwork or a file with finished booklet dimensions.

For manual duplex, follow the printer’s instructions for reinserting sheets. This planner cannot choose a universal long-edge or short-edge flip setting. Test a small numbered sheet before a full run. It also does not calculate paper thickness, creep, trim allowances or separate bound sections.

Source and calculation method

Adobe’s current booklet printing instructions explain automatic page arrangement, binding options, manual duplex printing and folding. The page pairs, blank-page mapping and proof diagrams here are Paper & Scale’s calculations for one nested booklet.

No printer or press testing is implied. Paper thickness, finishing, feed direction and driver behaviour are separate from the arithmetic.

Keep things in proportion.
