A WORKED FOLDING REFERENCE

Booklet printing page order

Document pages are read one after another, but folded sheets need different front and back pairs. These worked examples show exactly where every page and added blank goes.

First distinguish pages, faces and sheets

A document page is one reading position. A physical sheet has a front and a back; each printed face holds two booklet pages. Folding and nesting the sheets brings those positions into sequence. A cover that carries no printed page number still occupies a document position.

Count the front cover as position 1 when it is part of the same document. Count all other cover faces and intentional blanks. The examples use left binding and show each face as viewed from its printed side, with the top edge upright. They do not describe how a particular printer loads or turns the paper.

For another count or right binding, use the booklet page order calculator. It keeps added blanks separate from real source pages.

8-page booklet printing order

8 document pages use 2 double-sided sheets, with no padding blanks. Read the rows from the outer sheet toward the centre.

12 document pages use 3 double-sided sheets, with no padding blanks. Read the rows from the outer sheet toward the centre.

16-page booklet printing order

16 document pages use 4 double-sided sheets, with no padding blanks. Read the rows from the outer sheet toward the centre.

10 pages: show the two added blanks

10 document pages use 3 double-sided sheets and 2 appended blank positions. Read the rows from the outer sheet toward the centre.

The outside front has an added blank opposite document page 1; the outside back has page 2 opposite the other added blank. No source-page 11 or 12 is invented.

This end padding means source page 10 is no longer the booklet’s back cover. If it must remain the back cover, insert two blanks before it in the source document and enter the revised 12-page total. The planner does not move artwork.

What changes for right binding?

Mirror each front/back pair. The left-bound 8-page outer front is 8 | 1; with right binding it becomes 1 | 8. The corresponding back changes from 2 | 7 to 7 | 2. The page count, number of physical sheets and number of blanks stay the same.

This changes the binding-side arrangement. It does not change the reading direction inside the artwork or tell a printer how to duplex the sheet.

Keep the source PDF in reading order

Adobe’s Booklet print mode performs page arrangement for you. Supply the document in normal reading order and compare the application’s preview with the appropriate table. A diagram or CSV from this site is a checking reference, not a replacement for the source artwork.

A PDF that has already been arranged into printer spreads should not be imposed a second time. Likewise, a page-pair table should not be pasted blindly into a printer’s page-range box: a range of document pages, a two-pages-per-side layout and a booklet operation are different controls.

Make a small numbered proof

Start with a short test. Mark its top edge, print the two faces using the application and printer instructions, fold it, then check that the page positions read in sequence. If the back is upside down or the sheets reverse order, inspect the duplex and manual-feed settings rather than changing the page-pair arithmetic.

Adobe specifically directs manual-duplex users to follow their printer’s reinsertion instructions. There is no universal flip or reload instruction that this page can safely infer. For geometric size checks, use the print calibration reference and actual-size printing guide.

This model covers one folded nested booklet. Physical paper bulk, creep, finishing tolerances and multiple separately bound sections need a production-specific workflow.

Source and calculation method

Adobe’s current booklet printing instructions explain automatic page arrangement, binding options, manual duplex printing and folding. The page pairs, blank-page mapping and proof diagrams here are Paper & Scale’s calculations for one nested booklet.

No printer or press testing is implied. Paper thickness, finishing, feed direction and driver behaviour are separate from the arithmetic.

Keep things in proportion.
