What size is A4?

210 × 297 mm

That is 21 × 29.7 cm, or approximately 8.27 × 11.69 inches. These are portrait dimensions. Swap width and height for landscape.

A4 is half the nominal area of A3 and about twice that of A5. US Letter is wider and shorter, so check the paper setting when sharing documents between the two formats.

A4 size in pixels

Paper has physical dimensions; its pixel dimensions depend on the resolution you choose. The values below are rounded to the nearest whole pixel.

A4 image dimensions at common pixel densities
Image resolutionWidth × height
72 PPI595 × 842 px
150 PPI1240 × 1754 px
300 PPI2480 × 3508 px
600 PPI4961 × 7016 px

A 300 PPI image covering an A4 page is approximately 2480 × 3508 pixels. This describes image resolution, not the printer’s dot resolution.

Printing and scaling A4

To fit an A4 page on A3, use approximately 141.4%. To reduce it to A5, use approximately 70.5%. These percentages use the rounded nominal dimensions and assume no printer margins.

For a document that must retain its dimensions, select Actual size or 100% in your print dialogue, check the preview, then measure a test print. Read the actual-size printing guide.

How much does a sheet weigh?

At 80 gsm, one nominal A4 sheet weighs approximately 4.99 g. Paper GSM measures mass per square metre, so heavier stock changes the result without changing the page dimensions.
